16 Dead Giveaways Your Writing Came from AI (and How to Fix Them)
AI is great … until it gives you away.
Customers can tell when your content sounds robotic, and that can turn them off fast! Even search engines prefer content that feels real, helpful, and written for humans.
Here’s how to spot the telltale signs and how to sound human instead:
1. Overly Formal Openings
AI: “In today’s ever-changing world, it is imperative to leverage innovative solutions.”
Human: “Things are moving fast, here’s how to keep up.”
👉 Formal intros feel stiff and impersonal. Human openings hook the reader immediately.
2. Repetitive Sentence Structure
AI: “AI can help businesses save time. AI can also reduce costs. AI is transforming work.”
Human: “AI is changing the way we work. From cutting costs to saving time, it’s shaking things up.”
👉 Varying sentence structure keeps the writing dynamic and engaging.
3. Unnatural Punctuation
AI: “AI tools, which are designed to help businesses, can increase efficiency, and productivity; they are also scalable.”
Human: “AI tools make work easier and faster, and they grow with your business.”
👉 Overstuffed or missing punctuation makes text harder to read. Natural punctuation flows with the reader.
4. Buzzword Overload
AI: “Businesses must leverage cutting-edge, robust frameworks to unlock scalable solutions.”
Human: “Businesses need tools that actually work, and keep working as they grow.”
👉 Jargon alienates readers. Simple language communicates clearly.
5. Awkward Transitions
AI: “Moreover, companies must consider the evolving digital landscape.”
Human: “Here’s the catch: the digital world never slows down. New opportunities pop up all the time.”
👉 Forced transitions feel robotic. Natural connectors make reading smooth.
6. Over-Explaining Simple Ideas
AI: “Effective communication is important because it allows for better collaboration, which can increase productivity and lead to improved outcomes.”
Human: “Good communication makes teams work better. Period.”
👉 Over-explaining bores readers. Concise statements hit harder.
7. Perfectly Symmetrical Lists
AI:
Don’t forget to edit.
Don’t use too many adverbs.
Don’t rely only on AI.
Human:
Edit it to sound like you.
Trim the extra words.
And seriously, don’t let AI do all the work!
👉 Perfectly uniform lists look mechanical. Variation feels human.
8. Grammar That’s Too Correct
AI: “It is essential to avoid over-reliance on AI tools to ensure authentic content creation.”
Human: “Don’t let AI do all the work if you want your writing to sound real.”
👉 Humans bend grammar rules naturally. Flawless grammar can feel sterile.
9. Overuse of Adverbs
AI: “AI can significantly improve productivity by effectively managing tasks and ultimately enhancing efficiency.”
Human: “AI helps teams get more done, faster.”
👉 Excess adverbs clutter writing. Strong verbs communicate more powerfully.
10. Flat Voice, No Personality
AI: “Do not overlook the importance of developing a comprehensive strategy.”
Human: “Don’t skip the strategy, it’s the part that makes everything else work!”
👉 Contractions, slang, and quirks keep writing relatable and alive.
11. Neutral Opinions / Hedging
AI: “On the one hand, AI has benefits. On the other hand, it presents challenges.”
Human: “AI is useful, but it’s not magic. It still needs a human touch.”
👉 Taking a clear stance shows confidence and makes content more memorable.
12. Unnatural Rhythm
AI: “AI tools are useful for businesses. They can increase efficiency. They can also reduce costs.”
Human: “AI tools can save money and time. But here’s the real win, they free up people to focus on what matters.”
👉 Varying sentence length creates a natural flow and keeps readers engaged.
13. Generic Intros and Conclusions
AI: “In conclusion, it’s important to leverage AI effectively.”
Human: “Here’s what matters: use AI wisely, and make sure your voice is in every word.”
👉 Generic framing feels robotic. Personalized intros and conclusions resonate.
14. No Unique Examples or Stories
AI: “Businesses often benefit from AI because it increases productivity.”
Human: “Last month, our team used AI to draft a campaign in hours instead of days. In all that free time saved, we brainstormed bigger ideas.”
👉 Stories and anecdotes make content relatable and memorable.
15. Overly Safe / Balanced Writing
AI: “AI has pros and cons, so use it carefully.”
Human: “AI is powerful, but don’t let it replace your human insight. Some decisions still need a human brain.”
👉 Playing it too safe feels bland. Showing perspective creates authority.
16. Too “Perfect” or Polished
AI: Uniform sentences, tidy paragraphs, flawless grammar everywhere.
Human: Imperfections, sentence fragments, contractions, and casual phrasing all make writing relatable.
👉 Slight imperfections make content feel real and approachable.
Bottom Line
AI is a tool.
Your personality makes it shine.
Edit, add your voice, mix up sentence rhythm, and share your perspective. Readers don’t want perfection. They want you!

About the Author: Justin Starbird I have been fortunate to have had several entrepreneurs that came before me take the time to “pull back the curtains” and allow me to be a part of their multi-million dollar companies… and actually value my input. They allowed me to see their mistakes and learn from their real-world lessons so that I wouldn’t have to pay the expensive costs of experience on my own. Additionally, they taught me what really works and the importance of action - not just ideas.
